Visiting La Bocana first with friends and later with my husband was unforgettable. We enjoyed the thrill of off-shore fishing, catching an abundance of tuna, and sharing the joy of this hidden paradise. The experience was truly magical.

We visited La Bocana just two months after Hurricane Hilary hit land. In the aftermath of Hilary’s devastating impact in August of 2023, the community of La Bocana, was demonstrating remarkable resilience and unity. 
The hurricane caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, but the spirit of the community was strong. Local residents, supported by volunteers and aid organizations, were working tirelessly to rebuild their remarkable town.
Known for its stunning natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and exceptional fishing, La Bocana offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, La Bocana promises an unforgettable experience.
Tucked away on the rugged coast of Baja California Sur, La Bocana is a small fishing town that embodies the essence of untouched beauty and tranquility. As you approach La Bocana, the landscape unfolds into a picturesque scene of azure waters meeting rocky shores, framed by a backdrop of desert mountains. La Bocana’s coastline is dotted with secluded beaches and rocky outcrops, perfect for exploration and relaxation. The waters here are not only rich with marine life but also hide geological treasures beneath their surface. Volcanic lava bombs, remnants of ancient eruptions, create a unique underwater landscape. Above the water, La Bocana offers one of nature’s most fascinating landscapes: the salt flats. These vast, glistening expanses of white crystals stretch out under the Baja sun, creating a surreal, otherworldly scene that captivates visitors with its stark beauty. The salt flats, a result of the region’s unique climate and geology, offer a striking contrast to the azure waters and rugged coastline, showcasing the diverse natural wonders of La Bocana.

Fishing in La Bocana is productive year-round, with different species peaking in various months:
January to March: This period is prime for yellowtail and halibut, with the cooler waters bringing these fish closer to shore.
April to June: Sea bass and corvina are abundant, providing excellent opportunities for anglers looking for a thrilling catch.
July to September: The warm summer months are ideal for catching roosterfish and dorado, which are more active during this time.
October to December: The fall season brings an influx of yellowfin tuna and wahoo, making it a favorite time for sport fishing enthusiasts.
La Bocana, Baja California Sur, is a hidden gem for fishing enthusiasts, offering diverse angling experiences that range from on-shore and off-shore to estuary fishing. This quaint fishing village, with its rich marine biodiversity and stunning coastal landscapes, promises an unforgettable adventure for every type of fisherman.
On-Shore Fishing:
For those who prefer the simplicity and tranquility of fishing from the shore, La Bocana’s pristine beaches provide the perfect setting. Cast your line into the surf and wait for the tug of a variety of species such as croaker, corvina, and surfperch. The gentle lapping of waves and the breathtaking coastal scenery make on-shore fishing a serene and rewarding experience. Early mornings and late afternoons are prime times, offering cooler temperatures and increased fish activity.
Off-Shore Fishing:
Off-shore fishing in La Bocana is an exhilarating pursuit, with the Pacific Ocean offering rich fishing grounds just a short boat ride away. Local charters and guides, who know the waters intimately, are available to take you to the best spots. Anglers can expect to reel in impressive catches such as yellowtail, dorado (mahi-mahi), marlin, and tuna, especially during the peak seasons.
Estuary Fishing:
The estuaries of La Bocana present a unique fishing environment, teeming with life thanks to the mix of salt and fresh water. Kayak or small boat fishing in these calm waters allows for closer encounters with a diverse array of fish species, including corvina, spotted bay bass, halibut, snook, snapper, and grouper. The estuaries’ lush mangroves and serene channels not only provide excellent fishing opportunities but also a chance to observe the abundant birdlife and other wildlife that thrive in this rich habitat.
Hiring a local guide is highly recommended to make the most of your fishing adventure in La Bocana. Local guides possess invaluable knowledge of the best fishing spots, techniques, and seasonal patterns. They also provide the necessary equipment and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Local Recommendations:
Upon arrival, ask for recommendations from your accommodation or local restaurants. Many guides operate independently and can be contacted directly. We ultimately used Valentin to guide us as to who to use.
Fishing Charters: Several fishing charters operate in the area, offering guided tours with experienced captains. These charters can be booked in advance online or through local tour operators.
Community Connections: The close-knit community of La Bocana means that word of mouth is a reliable way to find a reputable guide. Engage with locals and fellow travelers to get the best recommendations.
La Bocana is not only a fishing paradise but also a fantastic destination for surfers. The village’s coastal geography creates consistent and well-formed waves that cater to all skill levels. The best surf spots are located near the estuary, where the river meets the ocean, creating long and smooth rides. The waves here break both left and right, providing a variety of surfing experiences.
The surf season in La Bocana peaks from June to October, when the south swells generate the most consistent and sizeable waves. During this time, the warm water and sunny weather make for perfect surfing conditions. For beginners, the smaller waves in the estuary offer a gentle introduction to the sport, while more experienced surfers can challenge themselves on the larger ocean swells.
While exploring the cliffs during low tide, we came upon a shelf of the most unusual rock formations in the surf. We think they are Volcanic Lava Bombs, but I can’t find any research to confirm it and the locals simply said that they were a natural phenomenon. Whatever they are, they are beautiful and we spent hours walking around them. When we went back to show friends, the tide was high and we would have never known they were there.
La Bocana offers a range of accommodations to suit different preferences and budgets, from rustic beachfront cabins to cozy eco-friendly lodges.
La Bocanita
I can only vouch for two locations in La Bocanita. First I stayed in La Bocanita (Little House), it is a charming rental offered by the warm and welcoming Valentin and Edith. This cozy, rustic accommodation is out of town, just slightly, sitting atop a coastal cliff, boasting the most stunning ocean views, comfortable amenities, and an authentic Baja experience. We stayed here our first trip to La Bocana. 
Edith and Valentin built it with such love and care and now rent it as well. On our trip they found out that it was my husband’s birthday and showed up with a bottle of their own branded wine and shared a toast with us. They are just wonderful people.
Valentin’s Apartment in Town
For those preferring a location closer to the marina, Valentin and Edith have an upstairs apartment that provides a modern, well-appointed retreat with easy access to local attractions. We stayed here on our second trip because La Bocanita was rented. On that trip Edith and Valentin asked us to stay for dinner and brought us into their home for a warm and inviting conversation. It’s worth it to go back to La Bocana just to break bread with this lovely couple.

Fish Cabins
Renting a fishing cabin in La Bocana, is also an option if you want to be close to the Marina. They were in rough shape after the hurricane, but even before that, I would describe them as rustic yet charming cabins, situated just steps from the ocean, providing a cozy haven for those looking to experience the village’s authentic fishing culture.

Dining in the very small town of La Bocana can be an intimate and personalized experience. With few formal restaurants, you must inquire about dining and timing and call ahead to make reservations and ask about the day’s offerings.
La Bocana Adventure
La Bocana Adventure: This beachfront restaurant and bar is the same establishment that offers the fishing cabins and sport fishing boats and guides. The restaurant sits on the sand and offers a full bar, indoor and outdoor dining with wait staff. They specialize in fresh, locally caught seafood. Locals shared with us how many lobsters had been caught that day, we then called ahead and secured how many lobsters we wanted each night and they were ready when we arrived for dinner. It was an amazing and unique experience.
Cactus Restaurant Joaquine
Another dining highlight was the Cactus Restaurant also known as Joaquine’s. We used Cactus Sportfishing as a guide that day, then Joaquine and his son prepared our catch that evening for dinner in their home restaurant. Seated at a communal table, we enjoyed our freshly caught fish alongside our friends and other patrons, both locals and fellow fishermen. Joaquin’s place doesn’t keep regular hours, so you must seek him out and make a reservation. There’s no menu; instead, he asks about your preferences and crafts a meal tailored to your tastes, ensuring a personalized and unforgettable dining experience.
On a morning hike, not far from La Bocanita, we found an abalone farm that was fascinating to walk around. It offered a unique glimpse into sustainable aquaculture. This farm showcased the meticulous process of raising abalone from larvae to market size.

From Loreto, you can rent a car and embark on a scenic drive north along Federal Highway 1, followed by a turn onto a dirt road leading to the village. The drive takes around eight hours, offering breathtaking views of the Baja Peninsula’s rugged landscapes and coastline.
Alternatively, you can fly into Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) or San Diego International Airport (SAN) and drive south along the Transpeninsular Highway. The journey from Tijuana is approximately 500 miles and takes around ten hours, while the drive from San Diego is slightly longer at 520 miles. For those seeking a more adventurous route, consider taking a ferry from La Paz to Santa Rosalía and then driving southwest to La Bocana.
