Central Park, the heart and soul of Manhattan, is a world-renowned urban oasis that has been captivating visitors since its creation in 1858. Spanning 843 acres, this sprawling green space is an iconic landmark and a vital escape from the city’s fast-paced life. Designed by visionary landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, Central Park was conceived as a place where all New Yorkers—regardless of class—could find respite in nature. Its winding paths, scenic vistas, and picturesque lakes were meticulously planned to offer a serene retreat in the midst of one of the busiest cities in the world.
There are countless things to do in Central Park, making it a destination for relaxation, culture, and outdoor activities. For the uninitiated traveler, there are so many things to do in Central Park, but finding the right entrance to Central Park can be a perplexing choice. Divided into four quadrants from south to north, the Central Park has approximately 50 access points scattered across all four sides, many are discreet pedestrian-only entrances, known primarily to locals. Some allow cars to traverse the park, while others cater specifically to horse-drawn carriages and pedicabs. For the uninitiated tourist, commencing the journey from one of the main entrances simplifies navigation.

Central Park’s Carousel, tracing back to 1871, casts a spell on approximately 250,000 visitors each year. This beloved ride, a testament to enduring popularity, has seen four distinct models grace its site since its inception.
The initial Carousel was powered by a mule and horse hidden beneath in an underground compartment, responding to the subtle cues from its operator above. The subsequent steam-powered Carousels met unfortunate fates by fire. In 1950, a quest for revival led to the discovery of a forgotten gem in a Brooklyn trolley terminal.
Crafted in 1908 by Solomon Stein and Harry Goldstein, the current Carousel stands as one of the nation’s largest merry-go-rounds, boasting 57 hand-carved horses and two ornate chariots.

Did you know that Central Park hosts a beach volleyball court next to Sheep Meadow? After a picnic, grab a ball and enjoy a game on the sand courts. Additionally, try your hand at pickleball, located in Wollman Rink, a unique and fun experience in the heart of the park. Keep in mind that pickle ball is a seasonal activity at Wollman Rink.
The Mall is a beautiful walkway lined with American Elm trees and is one of New York City’s most iconic and serene spots, offering visitors a leafy, tranquil escape from the bustling streets. Located in the southern section of the park, this grand, tree-lined promenade is famous for its towering American elm trees that form a natural canopy, creating a picturesque setting perfect for strolling, people-watching, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature.
Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the mid-19th century, The Mall was intended to be a gathering place for leisurely walks, where New Yorkers could meet and socialize. Today, it continues to serve as a popular gathering spot, with benches lining the walkway, inviting visitors to sit and relax.
