First things first – the name: Santorini, Thira or Thera?
Well, it’s all of them. The island was originally called Thera after King Thera during the 9th century BC. It is now officially known as Thira, but the Greeks call it Santorini. This is a good fact to know, because you will hear all three, see them on a map or bus stop and wonder “Where am I?”

Indeed, Santorini is unquestionably a volcano, and it boasts a unique distinction as the only inhabited caldera in the world. The island itself is composed of several villages perched upon the rim of the caldera, offering breathtaking views of an active volcanic island situated within a bay formed by the caldera.
Located in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is part of a larger complex comprising five islands: Thira or Santorini (the largest), Thirassia, Aspronisi, Palea Kameni, and Nea Kameni. These five islands are actually considered overlapping shield volcanoes that have been shaped by the volcanic activity in the region. They are nested within the Cyclades, a renowned island group in the Aegean Sea. Expanding our perspective, the Cyclades are part of the broader Aegean Archipelago, which encompasses other island groups such as the Northeastern Aegean Islands, Euboea, Sporades, Saronic Islands, Dodecanese, and Crete.
Santorini’s volcanic origins have left an indelible mark on the landscape and have contributed to its unique beauty. Why are there so many Churches in Santorini – Religion, Taxes, or Both?

The exact number of churches and temples is difficult to determine due to the large number of small chapels and private family churches that may not be officially recorded. However, it is estimated that there are over 250 churches on the island!
Religion has always played a central role in Greek culture and society. The island’s predominantly Greek Orthodox Christian population has a strong religious identity, and the construction and maintenance of churches hold great significance. The local communities take pride in their churches, which serve as places of worship, community gathering, and cultural preservation.
However, the Greek government has also implemented tax exemptions for religious buildings. As a result, constructing a church was often seen as a way to avoid paying property taxes.
While tax codes have influenced the proliferation of churches on Santorini, it’s essential to note that the religious and cultural significance of these structures goes beyond financial considerations. The churches serve as important spiritual and cultural centers for the local community and contribute to the island’s overall aesthetic appeal.
While driving and walking you can’t help but see the beauty of these buildings, in addition to the main churches, there are many smaller chapels scattered throughout the island. These chapels can be found in various locations, such as along hiking trails, on hilltops, near the coast, or tucked away in residential areas. They provide spiritual focal points for locals and visitors alike and are often adorned with beautiful frescoes, religious icons, and offerings. Apart from Christian churches, Santorini also has a few ancient temples that date back to the island’s pre-Christian era. These temples were dedicated to ancient Greek gods and goddesses, such as Apollo, Dionysus, and Demeter.
