Being part of the live audience and watching The Today Show in the heart of Rockefeller Plaza wasn’t just a one-time thrill; it was a double delight for me! If you visit the live show, I promise you will have an unforgettable morning in the bustling heart of New York City. As a seasoned traveler to this iconic show, meeting the dedicated journalists, chatting with the friendly NBC Pages, and planning the perfect attire and an attention-grabbing sign all added to two incredible mornings.

Planning each visit is a meticulous affair, from deciding on the best arrival time to navigating the subway or opting for nearby parking. The excitement peaks as you become part of the live broadcast, your sign waving proudly, and your presence immortalized on national television.

How to Plan Your Visit to the Today Show Live

The Today Show invites you to sign up in advance. I did both times, but I am not sure it was worth the energy. Nothing came of it. Arriving early is key, and strategic planning is a must. Consult the show’s calendar. I looked for a slow day both times. I saw people camped out down the street two days early for a mid-week concert, unless you love that band, avoid those days! I arrived at 4:45am and 5:10am and secured a third place in line both times. (Starbucks is directly across the street!) The key is to get a spot in the middle of the front row (You are facing the TV screen in the middle of the plaza) to have the best chance of landing some camera time and a selfie with the hosts. People will arrive late and try and wedge you out, be kind, but be firm, or you will be in the back!

What happens while you are waiting for the Today Show Live show to start?

The city’s energy is infectious in those early morning hours as you stand outside, surrounded by fellow enthusiasts, creating a camaraderie with people from all walks of life. The first time I brought a book thinking it would be a long wait. Not at all!

You are allowed onto the Plaza at 6:15am and can bring in food and drinks, but you do have to go through security. (Don’t bring luggage – they won’t let you in, just a regular bag). Once you are on the Plaza, the Pages and producers come out and chit chat, they do light interviews of the guests and decide who will get to speak on camera. Since you are right outside Studio 1A, you get to watch the anchors get their microphones on and get ready. The Pages also engage the crowd with stories about the job, show you how to stand to get the perfect selfie, share Rockefeller trivia and interesting antidotes about the show.

How to get on camera for the Today Show Live

Come prepared, be early or you won’t be considered. They choose the people almost right away. They like signs, big groups, fun hats, matching outfits. They want the show to be fun and energetic. If it’s your birthday, bring a sign, but be prepared that others in the crowd may have the same plan. People beside me had a sign for their parent’s anniversary, that got them on – Nana and Papa weren’t even with them! My sign said “Celebrating 33 years of Friendship TODAY.” But I spilled coffee on mine after we were chosen, so my sign didn’t make the show, but it made the cut!

While The Today Show is Live

The Show is shown live both on the screen in the center as well as on the wall of the building, so you actually get to watch the show. The pre-recorded Plaza Guest spots are shown on air at 8am and the hosts come out after that.

The anchors do an incredible job or trying to reach every guest, but that can’t be an easy job! Al Roker stayed behind and made sure to loop the plaza twice and ensure everyone got a photo. You have to be ready with your camera, back turned to them, and don’t be shy! They are the nicest people!

How to Get to The Today Show Live

I walked the first time because I was staying a mere block away, the second time I took an Uber. The closest subway stop to the TODAY Plaza is the 47th – 50th Streets – Rockefeller Center station on the B,D,F,M trains. 24/7 parking is also available nearby at the Rockefeller Center Parking Garage at 53 West 48th Street.
