Introducing Chapo, AKA, Chapolicious. Chapo is my guy, my recue Frenchie that has turned our household upside down. He is a charismatic and resilient French Bulldog who is a four-year-old, blue brindle with a story to tell.
Chapo joined our family as my youngest son was heading off to college, you could say that he helped fill a void for me, “lose a kid get a dog.” I had no idea however, what a journey it would be with a rescue Frenchie filled with emotional baggage. He joined our family at the age of 2, weighing a mere 15 pounds (today he is 26 pounds), resembling a bag of bones. The woman who delivered him to me, dropped him off with a cage and a blanket, he had never had dog food (his diet consisted of McDonalds and Taco Bell) and was confined to a cage for 23 hours a day.
Let me tell you, this young Frenchie was one selfish, naughty, leg lifting, little beast! He was a taker, a marker, and didn’t seem to truly bond with any of us at first. But rest assured, my older Frenchie, Daryl, got right to work and showed him who was boss and how things were going to go.
Nowadays, Chapo enjoys the good life, with near-daily walks along the beach and a generous supply of Frenchie treats. Despite his troubled past, he has blossomed into a character full of love and affection, albeit still carrying some emotional baggage. I call him my Velcro dog, craving constant closeness and affection.
One of Chapo’s quirks is his love for sleeping under the covers, preferably on top of my stomach, snoring like a 300-pound man! We are still working on that. As soon as I fall asleep, he sneaks right in – making for a not so wonderful slumber. His facial expressions are reminiscent of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, tugging at my heartstrings with their pitiful charm. He still pees in the house when we leave him, his emotional punishment still in full force, but his sweet licks and abundant snuggle time make it impossible not to forgive his mischievous side.
Chapo’s presence has undeniably taken over the household. With demands that can be loud and insistent, this Frenchie knows how to make his needs known.
Join Chapo on his adventures as he continues to conquer hearts, one snore and snuggle at a time. I share My Storied Frenchie Journeys, not to just show how much I love my dogs, but to explain Frenchie ownership and show how French Bulldogs might now be the breed for everyone. I hope that I can help eliminate stories of neglect like Chapo’s.
