First Stop: Château d’Amboise (Distance: 16 miles from Tours, 35 minutes by car)

Chateau d'AmboiseBegin your castle tour with Château d’Amboise, a royal residence that once hosted French kings and Renaissance icons. Located in the charming town of Amboise, this château holds a commanding position above the Loire River, offering sweeping views of the surrounding valley. Château d’Amboise has an illustrious history, with its most famous resident being Leonardo da Vinci, who spent his final years here under the patronage of King Francis I. Château de Chambord: A Masterpiece of French Renaissance (Distance: 40 miles from Chenonceau, 1 hour by car)

Chateau de ChambordNo trip to the Loire Valley would be complete without visiting the grandest of them all, the Château de Chambord. This massive and awe-inspiring structure is the epitome of French Renaissance architecture, boasting a staggering 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases. Designed to impress, Chambord was commissioned by King Francis I as a hunting lodge, but its grandeur and scale are unmatched by any other castle in the region. One of the most iconic features of Château de Chambord is its double-helix staircase, believed to have been influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, who spent time in the court of Francis I. This architectural marvel allows two people to ascend or descend without crossing paths, making it a must-see for any visitor. The château’s rooftop terrace provides panoramic views of the estate’s vast grounds, which include forests, lakes, and a game reserve that still houses wild deer. After exploring the château, visitors can enjoy the surrounding Chambord Park, which covers over 13,000 acres. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a bike or take a horse-drawn carriage ride to experience the vastness of the estate, or enjoy a leisurely boat ride along the château’s canals.

Finish your day and head back to Tours. It’s a bit of a drive, 49 miles and takes about an hour. Be prepared to return your car and grab dinner before heading back to the train. It’s a long day, but well worth the adventure.
