La Galerie Dior, or 30 Avenue Montaigne, is located in the “Golden Triangle” referring to a prestigious and affluent area in the city’s 8th arrondissement. This area is formed by three of the city’s most famous avenues: Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Avenue Montaigne, and Avenue George V. It’s called the “Golden Triangle” due to its reputation for luxury shopping, high-end fashion, upscale hotels, fine dining, and its overall association with wealth and elegance.
This famous location has a rich history dating back to 1946 when Christian Dior himself founded the House of Dior. And it is not just a typical store; it is an historic mansion known for its elegant and grand architecture.
When Maison Dior first opened on December 16, 1946, it had three workshops and employed 85 people. It was here that Dior designed his first collection, coined “The Look” on February 12, 1947. Today it has been reimagined to become La Galerie Dior and represents the visions of Christian Dior (1946-1957), Yves Saint Laurent (1957 – 1960), Marc Bohan (1960 – 1989), Gianfranco Ferré (1989 – 1996), John Galliano(1996 – 2011), Raf Simons (2012 – 2015) and Maria Grazia Chiuri (2016 – to the present day).
The mansion at 30 Avenue Montaigne has played a crucial role in shaping the image of the Dior brand and is recognized as a symbol of luxury and style. It has historical significance as the place where Christian Dior founded his fashion house and introduced more than 70 years of collections to the world.
I was so excited to tour La Galerie Dior and made it a full afternoon. It started with lunch nearby which became an event unto itself. We lunched in an extravagant little restaurant called L’Avenue. We just sort of wandered in before our scheduled tour of La Galerie Dior. It took about one second to realize that we were in the midst of well, wealth. L’Avenue, as it turns out, is celebrated not only for its cuisine but also for its stylish ambiance and reputation as a place to see and be seen. We stayed, we dined, we casually side glanced at the patrons. The food was unreal, the champaign better and the ambiance luxurious. It was the perfect way to start our day.
It’s hard to describe the feeling when I walked in. It’s a museum, but unlike any you have experienced. It’s the care and finesse, the art, the fashion, the design of emotion. Each room transcends you with carefully curated installations, from the sketches and vision to the final piece. It was a truly exquisite experience.
I embarked on a journey starting on the most amazing stairway and then stepping through 13 thematic rooms displaying beautiful and haunting looks, original sketches, archival documents, accessories and inspired pieces trans.
The La Galerie Dior tour begins with a grand staircase that stretches three stories high. As you ascend, your eyes will be treated to a mesmerizing display of miniature Dior creations, meticulously arranged by color. Imagine 1,874 exquisite looks suspended in air, forming a rainbow of couture wonders. The sight is nothing short of spectacular.
These famous stairs witnessed the beginning of Dior’s fashion success. In Galerie 1 you’ll find photos from the infamous New Look collection of February 12, 1947 debut. What you’ll see is a packed show with scores of people on these very stairs, capturing the sheer excitement of the event.
The Star is synonymous with the Dior brand and can be seen throughout many pieces.
Dior actually found a star on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris while on his way to the meeting with the financier for his fashion house. He saw it as a sign of destiny.
Christian Dior never made any decisions without consulting his fortune teller. He sought one out as a child and was told that “Women would make his success.”
Dior himself used the star as fabric on his Bonne Étoile in 1952, since then it has been used by his successors on several designs.
As you make your way through the galleries you are met with displays about Dior’s life and his death, his successors, and the Dior brand. Each gallery is a tribute to the art and transformation of fashion.
With over 1,000 looks on display, many of which have never been seen before by the public, it was so easy to be lost in a sea of beauty.
After a few hours of walking the galleries, my girlfriend and I decided we needed to have another glass of champaign and dessert in Le Café Dior. Again, it was wonderful, and special and just a perfect day.
