Visit Los Barriles, a hidden gem nestled along the eastern coast of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. This charming seaside town, known for its tranquil atmosphere, stunning beaches, and water sports galore, offers an authentic Mexican experience far from the crowds of more touristy destinations. Visit Los Barriles on a virtual journey as we uncover all the things to do and the beauty and adventure that await you.
Los Barriles is blessed with some of the most pristine beaches on the Baja Peninsula. When you visit Los Barriles, kick back, soak up the sun, or take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Cortez. Playa Norte and Playa Los Barriles are local favorites.
Los Barriles is renowned for its sportfishing opportunities. Join a local charter and reel in marlin, dorado, and other big game fish for a thrilling experience. If you visit Los Barriles, make sure to do your homework and check reviews regarding your boat and your captain. Make sure you understand whether you have a deckhand, are they supplying water and ice and what types of reels and lures that you’ll need. And don’t forget to get a fishing license. We fished both mornings for a 1/2 day!
This town is a water sports enthusiast’s paradise. Try your hand at kiteboarding, windsurfing, snorkeling, or paddleboarding. The calm, warm waters are perfect for beginners and experts alike. I chose kayaking, I did it every day! It was so easy to drag the kayak down to the sand and enter the calm, warm waters. Keep in mind that it does get windy, in fact it did every afternoon. So be prepared to kayak in the morning or fight the current and the winds later in the day.
Renting ATVs in Los Barriles is a fantastic way to explore the stunning Baja California landscape. Several rental shops in the town offer a range of all-terrain vehicles for adventurers of all levels. With rugged desert trails and coastal routes awaiting, you can embark on thrilling off-road journeys to hidden beaches, desert dunes, and breathtaking viewpoints. I had the best time exploring the area on an ATV. We had so much fun cruising the sandy beach and racing through the arroyo (dry river bed).
Booking a private in-room massage when you visit Los Barriles for a wonderful way to unwind and pamper yourself during your stay. Many local spas and wellness centers offer this service, making it convenient for you to relax without leaving the comfort of your accommodation. To arrange a private massage, you can typically contact the spa directly or inquire at the front desk of your hotel or vacation rental. They will assist in scheduling a massage therapist to come to your room at a time that suits you. Keep in mind that this is a very small town, the massage I had was nice and relaxing, but while she claimed to be “certified,” I’m not sure it was in being a massage therapist.
Hotel Palmas de Cortez is a renowned beachfront resort located in Los Barriles. This luxurious destination offers a wide array of amenities and activities for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure. We made very good use of the swim up bar. It was so relaxing to swim, laugh and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We also enjoyed breakfast and brunch and were treated to lovely service.
The Los Barriles Oasis Waterfall, tucked away in the rugged Baja California landscape, offers a thrilling adventure for nature enthusiasts. Reaching this hidden gem is a wild trek before you even begin the hike. It is only accessible by ATV or side-by-side, as you travel across the rocky terrain along the arroyo. Once you arrive at the trail to the cascada, you’ll navigate narrow trails, cross streams, and if you are lucky spot the wild donkeys. If you don’t see them, you will most certainly spot their scat. It is everywhere. The waterfall is small, but rewarding. Wear lots of bug spray! We did jump in and swim around, it is not deep, but the water was very cool and refreshing.
Savor authentic Mexican cuisine at local eateries. Don’t miss out on the fresh seafood, street tacos, and delicious margaritas. We dined out every night. The town is small, quite modern and has several restaurants to choose from. Even sushi and oddly, several hot dog carts! We found ourselves at Smokeys one night to watch a little football and then discovered more authentic restaurants (with football on) the rest of the week. The food and service was wonderful everywhere we went.
We stayed at Casa Cielo, a private residence, rented off Airbnb, and it was an absolute dream come true! This ocean-view villa in Los Barriles is a slice of paradise. The breathtaking vistas from the terrace took our breath away every morning. The villa itself is beautifully designed, spacious, and immaculately clean.
The infinity pool was a highlight, and we spent many afternoons basking in the sun while gazing at the Sea of Cortez.
Casa Cielo truly provided a serene escape, and we left feeling rejuvenated and grateful.
