Playa Caballo, Mexico

I was on a five-day road trip traveling south of Puerta Vallarta and we chose to take a panga from Boca de Tomatlan for the day. When I travel, I like to know the lay of the land so that I don’t miss anything. But I also love it when something really special just happens to me. Playa Caballo, Mexico happened to me, and it might have been one of my favorite days on the trip.

The beach is framed by lush, green hills, creating a secluded and picturesque setting that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Vallarta. The calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding, allowing visitors to explore the vibrant marine life that inhabits the area.

One of the most striking features of Playa Caballo is its untouched, natural beauty. Getting to Playa Caballo

Water Taxi in Playa CaballoReaching Playa Caballo is an adventure in itself, setting the tone for a unique getaway. The most common way to access this remote beach is by boat, with water taxis departing from Boca de Tomatlán, a charming fishing village about 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta. The boat ride, which takes approximately 20 minutes, offers stunning views of the rugged coastline and the lush, tropical vegetation that defines this part of Mexico.

For those who prefer a more adventurous route, a scenic hike from Boca de Tomatlán through the coastal jungle trails provides a rewarding alternative. This hike, which takes about an hour, winds through dense foliage, offering glimpses of hidden coves and panoramic ocean views along the way. Regardless of how you choose to arrive, the journey to Playa Caballo is a prelude to the beauty and tranquility that awaits.

Planning for Playa Caballo

Playa CaballoWe packed a cooler of snacks and drinks and hired a boat to take us to this beach. Playa Caballo had one open restaurant and hotel that was lively with music, drinks, and dancing. But beyond that, it was like we landed on a deserted island. We relaxed, we napped, we played in the water, we hiked the rocks and explored the tide pools. It was such an incredible find and a beautiful oasis. If I ever get back to this region, this is first on my list. It was a welcome relaxing day after so much travel. I felt lucky to have found it.

Entertainment on Playa Caballo

playa caballo puerto vallartaA few restaurants and establishments were on Playa Caballo, but not many. Casitas Maraiko was the only open establishment when we visited. It was a beachfront restaurant and hotel with excellent views, lounge chairs and umbrella rentals, dancing, music and accomodations if you wanted to stay (or missed that last water taxi back to Boca de Tomatlan.

playa caballo puerto vallartaIf you need a little more excitement, you can also walk to the next beach Playa Las Animas. This beach is far livelier and has more restaurants and accommodations.

Playa Caballo, just south of Puerto Vallarta, is a beautiful and secluded coastline in Mexico. The white sands, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil atmosphere, offered the perfect escape for an off the beaten path beach experience. Taking a water taxi and being dropped off on a near deserted beach was a bucket list experience at its best!
