Things to do in Punta Mita
Whale Watching in Punta Mita
Whale watching in Punta Mita is incredible experience. Either seeing the spouts with binoculars from the beach or up-close on a boat tour, the warm, protected waters of Banderas Bay serve as an ideal breeding ground for humpback whales, making Punta Mita a prime location for whale watching.
Every year, from December to March, these magnificent creatures embark on a long journey from the frigid waters of the North Pacific to the warm, nutrient-rich waters of Mexico. The migration spans thousands of miles, with the whales seeking the bay’s calm and temperate environment to give birth and nurture their young.
While humpback whales are the primary stars of Punta Mita’s whale-watching season, visitors might also catch glimpses of other cetaceans. Bryde’s whales, known for their slender bodies and three distinct ridges on their heads, occasionally grace the waters. Additionally, the bay is home to various species of dolphins, including the playful bottlenose and the agile spinner dolphins, which often accompany the whales, adding to the spectacle.
The annual migration of humpback whales is driven by the need to breed and give birth in warm, shallow waters. The whales travel from their feeding grounds in the North Pacific, which includes areas around Alaska and the Bering Sea, to the tropical waters of Banderas Bay.
In Banderas Bay, the whales find an ideal environment for breeding and calving. The warm waters are safer for newborn calves, providing a sanctuary from predators and rough ocean conditions. Female humpbacks give birth to their calves, which can measure up to 15 feet at birth, and spend the early months nursing and teaching them essential survival skills before making the journey back north.
The whale-watching season in Punta Mita typically runs from December to March, with January and February being the peak months. During this period, the bay’s waters are teeming with humpback whales, and sightings are almost guaranteed. Various local tour operators offer boat trips that allow visitors to get up close and personal with these gentle giants. These tours often include knowledgeable guides who provide insights into the whales’ behaviors and the ecology of Banderas Bay. You can walk into most of these tours along Avenida El Anclote and select a boat and time or arrange it through your resort. The operators are all different, one year we even had a boat operator who had a microphone for the water where we could listen to the whales beneath the water. It was incredible.
One of the highlights of Punta Mita is its proximity to the Marietas Islands, a group of small, uninhabited islands that are protected as a national park. A short boat ride from Punta Mita will take you to this natural wonder, where you can snorkel, dive, and explore hidden beaches, including the famous Playa del Amor (Lover’s Beach), which is accessible only through a tunnel.
