Nestled in the heart of Orange County, California, San Juan Capistrano is a city that effortlessly marries history and culture with modern attractions and natural beauty. Known for its iconic mission, picturesque downtown, historic Los Rios Street, endless hiking trails and equestrian lifestyle, San Juan Capistrano offers visitors an array of exciting experiences.
Along the railroad tracks is the Los Rios Historic District, which is the oldest neighborhood in California. The charming streets are lined with historic adobe homes, boutiques, cafes, and galleries. Stroll down Los Rios Street and immerse yourself in the town’s rich history while enjoying the local cuisine and artisan shops or stay the night at the Los Rios Cottages and really get a taste of this amazing little town. But be wary of the local San Juan Capistrano ghosts, they are just down the street.
The Mission San Juan Capistrano is an undeniable centerpiece of the city’s cultural heritage. Founded in 1776, it’s one of California’s most iconic historic sites. Explore the beautifully preserved adobe buildings, lush gardens, and the famous “Serra Chapel,” which is the state’s oldest church still in use. The mission is not only a historical treasure but also a peaceful oasis offering insight into California’s past.
Every March, the city comes alive with the Swallows Day Parade and day-long festivities a tradition that commemorates the return of the swallows from their winter migration. This colorful, lively event features a parade with equestrian displays and themed floats and local school and club participation. Throughout the day bands, vendors and food trucks showcases the town’s deep cultural roots. It’s a day you won’t want to miss.
Amid the missions, historic neighborhoods, and horse scene, a lesser-known treasure awaits the adventurous hiker – Flag Hill. Tucked away in the city’s backyard, this moderately challenging trail promises breathtaking views and a chance to connect with nature.
The hike to Flag Hill begins at the trailhead located on La Novia Avenue, just a short drive from downtown San Juan Capistrano. The hike to Flag Hill is a moderately challenging 2.4-mile round trip. While it’s not an easy stroll, the payoff is more than worth the effort. The well-marked trail gradually ascends through the beautiful San Juan Valley, surrounded by native flora and abundant wildlife.
The hike derives its name from the American flag that adorns the hill’s summit, a symbol of patriotism and pride. The flagpole was originally erected in 2001 in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks. It has since become an iconic landmark visible from many parts of San Juan Capistrano.
Experience the thrill of horseback riding in scenic San Juan Capistrano! Discover picturesque riding trails right on the city’s doorstep. With options for riders of all levels, including beginners (like me!) and experienced competitors, San Juan Capistrano’s perfect weather makes it a year-round equestrian haven. Explore more than just riding with horse camps and stables – embark on an unforgettable journey with these magnificent animals in this charming city. The city offers so many options for riding with several stables and equestrian centers nearby.
San Juan Capistrano boasts a thriving culinary scene. Numerous restaurants offer a wide array of dining options, from seafood and Mexican cuisine to farm-to-table delights. Dining with a view of the town’s lush landscapes is a must, and you can find this experience at places like Ramos House Café, Mayfield and Trevor’s at the Tracks.
But if you’re interested in dining in an historic location, look no further than the Egan House, The El Adobe and Swallows Inn.
El Adobe de Capistrano
Tucked just two blocks from the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Train Depot, El Adobe is a living California State Historical Landmark with a rich history and a touch of mystery. The building, originally two separate structures, once housed the Miguel Yorba Adobe, dating back to 1797, and the Juzgado (court and jails) established in 1812. As you dine amidst wood-beamed ceilings and authentic Mexican-Californian decor, you might hear whispers of ghostly tales. In 1957, a devastating fire nearly consumed the restaurant, but it emerged stronger. President Richard Nixon, a frequent guest, enjoyed Mexican dishes, and the restaurant welcomed notables like Henry Kissinger and John Wayne.
Egan House
The Richard Egan House, alternatively known as Egan House or Judge Richard Egan House, is recognized and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017, this architectural gem has a rich history.
Originally constructed in 1883 by San Juan Capistrano contractor William English for Richard Egan, the home is a unique representation of the Renaissance Revival architectural style in the town. The building once served as a courtroom for the town, operating in this capacity until Richard Egan’s passing in 1923.
Today the building has become home to Ellie’s Table. Inside the building, one can find an array of artifacts that offer glimpses into the late 19th and early 20th-century history of the town.
Swallows Inn
If you’re in search of late-night entertainment, look no further than the Swallows Inn.
The Swallows Inn is the epitome of a dive bar, packed with personality and colorful characters. Live music graces its stage four nights a week. The decor runs the gamut, from redneck license plates and dangling bras to cheeky T-shirts and vibrant neon beer logos. The bouncers, bartenders, and servers are all incredibly friendly and welcoming. Just remember to bring cash, as this is a cash-only establishment, although an ATM is available if needed.
Downtown San Juan Capistrano’s Franciscan Plaza offers a delightful blend of dining, wine tasting, movie watching and shopping experiences. You can savor the flavors of local cuisine at charming eateries, where farm-to-table freshness meets Mexican and Italian specialties. After a satisfying meal, explore a variety of unique boutiques, from artisan crafts to fashion, all within the picturesque setting of this historic town square. It’s a must-visit destination for those seeking culinary and shopping adventures.
One of my favorite restaurants and wine bar is Five Vines. The owners are so kind and friendly and always make a point to say hello. They bring home the small town feeling of San Juan Capistrano in California
Movie watching in San Juan is how we remember it growing up. It’s a small town feeling where you ride bikes into town, have dinner and walk across the street to the local movie. The seats are updated and comfy and they have a bar and will bring dinner to your seats. This is no megaplex and I just love it!
The San Juan Capistrano Train Station is located in the heart of the town. Once you disembark, you’ll be just a short walk away from the town’s historic district, downtown and Mission San Juan Capistrano.
If you’re traveling with children, Zoomars Petting Zoo is a must-visit. This interactive, family-friendly attraction allows kids and adults alike to get up close and personal with a variety of friendly animals, including goats, llamas, and more. It’s a fun, hands-on experience that offers hours of entertainment.
San Juan Capistrano’s antique shops are a treasure trove for enthusiasts and collectors. I love wandering through the town’s charming streets to discover hidden gems from bygone eras, from vintage furniture to unique curiosities. Embrace the thrill of the hunt and bring home a piece of history from this historic California town.
