There are so many things to do in Times Square. Experiencing Times Square time and time again in New York City never gets old. The dazzling lights, towering billboards, and electric energy always leave me in awe. Crossing this iconic spot off my bucket list was unforgettable, but each return visit only deepens my appreciation for its vibrant, unmatched atmosphere.
There is no place on earth quite like Times Square. An emblem of New York City’s vibrant energy, Times Square is where the pulse of entertainment, culture, and commerce converge. With its dazzling lights, constant movement, and infectious buzz, it’s no wonder Times Square is often referred to as “The Crossroads of the World.” Beyond its towering electronic billboards and renowned Broadway theaters, Times Square is steeped in history, art, and endless things to do. Whether you are here to see a show, shop, dine, or simply soak in the atmosphere, Times Square offers an unforgettable experience for everyone.
Originally known as Longacre Square, Times Square was a relatively quiet district in the late 19th century, lined with horse stables and carriage houses. It wasn’t until 1904, when Adolph S. Ochs, the publisher of The New York Times, moved his newspaper’s headquarters to the newly constructed Times Tower, that the area began its transformation into the entertainment mecca we know today. Ochs convinced the city to rename the area Times Square in honor of his newspaper, and the change marked the beginning of the area’s new identity as a hub of theater, commerce, and culture.
By the 1920s, Times Square was flourishing as the center of New York’s theater district, with Broadway theaters lighting up the streets and attracting audiences from all over the world. The neighborhood earned the nickname “The Great White Way” for its bright electric lights, which were a novelty at the time. During this period, Times Square became synonymous with glamour and entertainment.
However, the neighborhood fell into decline in the 1960s and 1970s, becoming a center for crime, drugs, and adult entertainment. The image of Times Square during this era was one of decay, far removed from its former glory. But in the 1990s, under the leadership of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and the Times Square Alliance, a dramatic revitalization effort transformed the area into a clean, family-friendly tourist destination offering so many things to do in Times Square.

Times Square Arts
Art lovers will find plenty to admire in Times Square, thanks to the efforts of Times Square Arts, the public art program of the Times Square Alliance. The program brings contemporary art installations, performances, and digital displays to the heart of Times Square, transforming the space into a living gallery.
One of the most popular public art projects is the Midnight Moment, a synchronized display of digital art that takes over the electronic billboards in Times Square every night from 11:57 PM to midnight. The artworks, which change monthly, offer a serene and often mesmerizing break from the usual advertising, providing a unique cultural experience for visitors.
Times Square Arts also hosts Valentine’s Heart Design, an annual competition where artists create interactive sculptures that celebrate love and community. These installations are displayed in Times Square each February, offering a fun and photogenic addition to the neighborhood.
