My Storied Journeys

3-day motorcycle ride through the Palomar MountainsWe spent the weekend motorcycle riding with friends through the Palomar Mountains in San Diego, and what a great local adventure it was. My husband had just traded up from our scooter to a motorcycle, with big plans to see the world on two wheels. While we’re not quite ready to embark on that global journey yet, it was lucky to find a local destination we hadn’t explored, perfect for a two-wheeled adventure.

The Palomar Mountains offer stunning scenic routes and winding roads, making it one of California’s hidden gems for motorcyclists. With towering pines, sharp switchbacks, and panoramic views of the surrounding San Diego landscape, it’s the ideal setting for a weekend escape. We enjoyed the thrill of the ride, stopping along the way to appreciate the serenity of the mountains and connecting with fellow riders. Whether you’re an experienced motorcyclist or just starting, the Palomar Mountains provide the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. If you’re seeking travel destinations in California, this two-day road trip offers everything you need to enjoy the open road, breathtaking views, and unforgettable memories with friends.

Josie’s Hideout Saloon

Josie's Hideout Saloon

The second day was packed with excitement as we geared up for a longer ride into the heart of the Palomar Mountains. Our first stop was Josie’s Hideout Saloon, just 27 miles from Pala. This legendary biker bar sits in a picturesque canyon along the winding 76 Highway. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and hearty meals, it’s a must-visit for any biker exploring the area. We fueled up with a hearty breakfast and soaked in the laid-back vibes.

Julian

Things to do in Julian

From Josie’s, we continued our journey, heading northeast to the historic mountain town of Julian. The 16-mile ride is full of breathtaking scenery, with sweeping views and twists and turns that make it a thrilling experience for any motorcyclist. Julian is famous for its apple pies, so we parked our bikes and strolled through town to enjoy a slice at Julian Pie Company. Afterward, we explored the town’s charming shops, picking up a few local treats and enjoying the mountain air.

Calico Cidery

Calico Cidery

After our pie-filled stop, we made our way to Calico Cidery, located just 8 miles from Julian. Set in a picturesque orchard, this cidery offers a unique chance to tour the grounds and taste some of the best hard cider in the region. The Cidery was so charming. The eight of us sat around a giant wood table on blanket covered bales of hay and learned about hard apple cider. I could have stayed all day.

Pala Casino, Spa and Resort

As the sun began to dip, we headed back to Pala Casino, completing the 91-mile round trip. That evening, we attended one of Pala’s live concerts—nothing beats ending a day of riding with good music and good company.

Day three kicked off with a ride up the winding roads to the Palomar Mountain Observatory. Located just 26 miles from Pala, the journey to the top of the mountain is filled with tight curves and exhilarating stretches of road. The Palomar Mountain Observatory is home to the famous Hale Telescope, and the observatory itself offers tours and exhibits on the wonders of the night sky. We took the opportunity to learn more about the observatory’s history and walked the nearby trails, which provide panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Garage.79

Garage.79

From the observatory, we headed down the mountain and made our way to Garage.79, a hidden gem located about 39 miles away. This motorcycle-themed eatery offers a great spot to grab lunch and swap riding stories with fellow motorcyclists. The rustic charm of the place, paired with its motorcycle decor, creates a unique vibe that’s perfect for a mid-ride pit stop.

Doffo Winery

Doffo Winery

Next up was Doffo Winery, located just 27 miles south of Garage.79 in Temecula Valley. Known for its collection of vintage motorcycles and excellent wine, Doffo is a biker’s dream destination. We toured the winery, tasting their range of wines while admiring the collection of motorcycles displayed throughout the property. The family-run winery offers an intimate and personal experience, making it a memorable stop on any motorcycle road trip.

With our hearts and stomachs full, we rode the final 18 miles back to Pala Casino RV Resort, completing a total of 110 miles for the day. As we sat around with friends, reminiscing about the weekend’s adventures, we knew this wasn’t just a trip—it was the start of a new tradition.
