Lucky, lucky, lucky. That is how I felt when I disembarked from our water taxi onto the shores of Yelapa. We were on a road trip with friends along the coast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when we opted for a day trip to Yelapa. What a beautiful and remote little coastal town.

We found ourselves boating to Yelapa on the fourth day of our roadtrip and I loved our time in Yelapa. It is more than just a beach town, with so many things to do in Yelapa. It is a colorful, muraled little village that offers shopping, hiking, dining, water sports and more.
Yelapa’s beach, a crescent of golden sand nestled along the southern shores of Banderas Bay, is the epitome of a tranquil coastal paradise. This idyllic spot is perfect for swimming, thanks to its calm, clear waters that are safe and inviting for all ages. The colors of Yelapa are unbelievable. It was one of my favorite things about the village. With every turn on the Cobblestone paths I was faced with murals, colorful potted plants, mosaic tiles and brightly painted buildings.
Yelapa’s village life thrives with several independent, family-owned restaurants where the catch of the day is the star of the menu. I only visited Yelapa for a day, but I think I ate at nearly every establishments! Margaritas watching the paraglides, Empanadas on the hike to the waterfall and dinner on the sand. It was all so delicious!
In Yelapa, the leisurely pace of life leaves visitors with ample time to explore the natural wonders of the region. Most choose to venture to one of two cascading waterfalls, each accompanied by refreshing natural pools.
The closest waterfall is just a 15-minute stroll from the beach, following a straightforward uphill path through the town. Along the way, well-placed signs guide you to your destination. However, be prepared for the popularity of this accessible spot. Cascade de Yelapa, tends to draw large crowds, especially during the peak tourist season and when cruise ships dock in Puerto Vallarta.
For those seeking solitude and a more adventurous experience, an alternative awaits. Begin your journey by hiking westward along the river’s edge, embarking on a path that requires several river crossings. Beyond the second crossing, you’ll find a well-marked trail, although some rock scrambling may be necessary as you approach the final stretch. It’s worth noting that river crossings can be more challenging during the rainy season from June to October.
The trek, lasting around an hour and a half, guides you through the heart of the tropical jungle, ultimately leading to the secluded swimming hole and waterfall of Yelapa Waterfall. While this cascade may be smaller than Cola de Caballo, the solitude it offers is its greatest treasure. Be sure to pack a bathing suit, comfortable hiking sandals, snacks, insect repellent, and an ample supply of water to make the most of your exploration.
