The gentle breeze from the harbor, views of the Statue of Liberty, and quiet paths make it a serene start to the day. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Views

The Battery, formally Battery Park, Financial District, New York City, Manhattan, The Battery PlayscapeVisiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from The Battery in Lower Manhattan is one of the most iconic experiences in New York City. The Battery, a historic waterfront park, offers stunning views of Lady Liberty and the gateway to America’s immigrant past, making it the perfect starting point for exploring these landmarks.

From The Battery, you can embark on a ferry tour to both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The ferry ride itself takes about 15 minutes to reach Liberty Island, where you can explore the statue up close, visit the museum, and even climb to the pedestal or crown for panoramic views of the city and harbor. From there, the ferry continues to Ellis Island, a short 10-minute ride, where you can delve into the history of millions of immigrants who passed through its halls at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration.

Ferry tours typically take around 4-5 hours, including time to explore both islands, but it’s best to plan for a full morning or afternoon. Tickets can be purchased in advance, and it’s recommended to arrive early at The Battery to secure your spot. Whether for history, architecture, or breathtaking views, this journey is an essential part of any visit to New York City.

Castle Clinton National Monument at The Battery

The Battery, formally Battery Park, Financial District, New York City, Manhattan, Castle ClintonCastle Clinton, located in The Battery has served various purposes throughout its history. Originally built as a fort to defend New York City during the War of 1812, it was named Fort Clinton after the then-mayor, DeWitt Clinton.

After its military use, Castle Clinton took on different roles. In the mid-19th century, it was repurposed as an entertainment venue, hosting concerts, exhibits, and theatrical performances. Notably, it was renamed Castle Garden during this time.

In the latter half of the 19th century, Castle Garden gained prominence as the country’s first immigration processing center before Ellis Island took on that role. It processed millions of immigrants, primarily from Europe, making it a crucial entry point for newcomers to the United States.

Today, Castle Clinton is a National Monument and a historic site. It houses exhibits about its military and immigration history and serves as a popular tourist attraction within Battery Park.
