Things to do in Dana Point Table of Contents

A Brief History of Dana Point

Dana Point’s story begins long before its modern establishment. Named after Richard Henry Dana Jr., a 19th-century sailor and author of Two Years Before the Mast, the area was once a critical port for trading hides and tallow from local ranchos. Dana described the area as “the most romantic spot in California” in his book, and today, it retains that same enchanting charm.

Indigenous peoples, particularly the Acjachemen Nation, called this region home for thousands of years, utilizing its resources for fishing, hunting, and gathering. In the late 18th century, Spanish missionaries arrived, eventually establishing nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano, which led to significant cultural shifts for the native populations.

By the early 20th century, Dana Point attracted developers who envisioned it as a resort town, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the area truly began to grow. The construction of Dana Point Harbor in 1971 transformed the city, cementing it as a prime coastal destination for boaters, surfers, and tourists alike.
