While navigating the picturesque coastline of Jalisco, Mexico, we stumbled upon the enchanting Boca de Tomatlan. Nestled at the convergence of a lush jungle valley and the Pacific Ocean’s Horcones River, this serene fishing village became our gateway to new adventures and a charming supply stop. How fortunate we were to uncover the allure of Boca de Tomatlan.
Boca de Tomatlan stands out among coastal towns. It’s larger than your typical village, boasting a delightful mix of offerings yet maintaining the quaint, charming allure that defines Mexican villages.
As you approach, you’re greeted by a panorama of colorful fishing boats gently bobbing in the crystal-clear bay waters. Along the sandy shore, you’ll find cozy eateries that add to the village’s inviting atmosphere. In addition, there are a few small mercados where you can stock up on fresh produce, meat, and any travel essentials you might need.
At the heart of Boca de Tomatlan, Mexico lies its magnificent beach. The serene beauty of the bay, framed by lush jungle-clad hills, is truly captivating. The beach is divided into two sections: the northern side, with the Boca Malecón, pier, water taxis, and bayfront restaurants; and the southern side, where you can relax under parasols, lounge chairs, and tables. Stroll to the far end of the southern side, and you’ll discover a magnificent tree offering respite in the shade while you bask in the shimmering waters.

You will find several family-owned beachfront restaurants offering menus based on fresh seafood and other traditional Mexican specialties. However, all the locals’ “uncle” owns a restaurant and is highly recommended. Do your own investigation. Not everyone’s “uncle” is a great chef.
Shopping in Boca de Tomatlan, Mexico

Exploring Nearby Beaches
Beyond Boca de Tomatlan, the coastal towns can only be reached by boat. This is where Boca de Tomatlan truly shines. It’s the last outpost where you can rent a boat to explore these idyllic beaches south of Puerto Vallarta, including Las Animas, Playa Caballo, Quimixto, and Yelapa. Daily, we made our way here to secure passage on these water taxis, which depart regularly. Keep an eye on the last taxi back to avoid being stranded. Alternatively, negotiate a private boat and driver for a more personalized experience and tailored pick-up times. We experienced both options and enjoyed every moment.
